Bacopa Monnieri has a bitter and pungent flavor. It has been used since the 6th century C.E. in Ayurvedic medicine and is considered the foremost tonic for the nervous system and general cognition. Historically it has been used to treat a variety of ailments including asthma, epilepsy, leprosy, indigestion, memory retention and as a mild sedative. A recent study in Australia has shown that it had a significant effect on the retention of new information. More than just improving mental functions and clarity, Bacopa Monnieri has also been used extensively in India to treat other nervous system disorders. It has been used as part of overall efforts to treat anxiety, hysteria, restlessness, amnesia, nervous breakdowns and even insanity. Ayurvedic medicine practitioners also implement brahmi-based treatments for such other nerve problems as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease.
But just what is it in the brahmi plant that makes it a potent brain food? The plant contains several compounds, alkaloids, bacosides and saponins (particularly hersaponin) that imbue it with powerful restorative and revitalizing properties that act on the brain and the nerves. Bacopa Monnieri is believed to enhance overall blood circulation in the nervous system that further strengthens its ability to treat mental impairment problems. Students in India are often encouraged by their parents to drink Bacopa Monnieri tea before they take their school examinations so that their brains would function optimally during the test. Bacopa Monnieri is known to be most effective when taken at dawn.
