Cat's claw is probably the most revered medicinal herb in all of the South American Amazonian rainforest. The alkaloids found in cat's claw have been documented to nutritionally support the immune system in a various ways. Cat's Claw has often been noted for its impressive anti-viral capacity, as well as it ability to bring balance to an overstressed immune system.
Cat's claw is a large, woody vine that derives its name from claws-like thorns that grow along the vine that help it climb from the jungle floor to as high as 30 meters. Two closely-related species of Uncaria are used medicinally: U. tomentosa and U. guianensis in Peru. Our cat's claw is the more potent species: U. Tomentosa.
Dosage: 3.5 grams makes 1-2 liters of tea. Adding lemon juice when heating will help extract more alkaloids and less tannins from the bark. Use about 1 tablespoon of lemon juice per liter of water. One may add 10 grams of Pau D'Arco to the cat's claw tea to make a traditional Shipibo Peruvian tea.
Another wonderful Cat's Claw tea recipe could include:
Pau D'Arco (10 grams)
Cat's Claw (3.5 grams)
Wolfberries or Goji Berries (20 grams)
1 raw vanilla bean
(This makes 2 liters of healing tea and is extraordinary when chilled)
Cat's claw TEAS make a fantastic base to cacao drinks. Simply add cacao beans or nibs to the TEA and blend. Also adding some form of sweetener (such as raw yacon root syrup, agave cactus nectar, lucuma, etc.) makes a wonderful tasting beverage; yet take note that the more sweetener that is used, the less effective is the cat's claw.
Our Cat's Claw is ethically harvested (without killing the plant) and the sale of this product supports indigenous peoples in Peru and helps protect the Peruvian/Amazonian rainforest from being cut down for cattle farming.
NOTE: Cat's claw has been contraindicated before or following any organ or bone marrow transplant or skin graft. Also it has been shown to inhibit fertility and thus not recommended for those persons wishing to get pregnant. It may be best to avoid use of this herb if you have any chronic health condition resulting from over-stimulation of the immune system, such as lupus, multiple sclerosis, scleroderma, or Show-gren's syndrome. Large doses may cause gastrointestinal discomfort.
