Muira Puama has been used traditionally in South American countries particularly Brazil as an aphrodisiac and for nervous conditions and depressions. It has been also used to promote overall nerve function and to relieve nerve pain. As its use has spread throughout the world, it is still relatively unknown, however many people have noted effectiveness in the areas of digestion, menopause, hair loss and depression.
In the past it was taken by chewing on the bark or root or leaf. Now it is most often consumed in teas, elixirs, and smoothies as a powder, and many people have found effectiveness with only a small amount in their tonics. Although amounts used may vary, we suggest to consult with a licensed health practitioner or herbalist for your particular needs and if this herb is suitable for you. It does have a stimulant effect that may result in a general feeling of well-being when taken in small doses. Large doses may cause an over stimulation leaving the user feeling restless and affecting sleep.
